In recent years, the field of computer science has undergone a remarkable transformation, revolutionizing various facets of our daily lives. The increasing use of artificial intelligence, data mining, and cloud technologies will lead to the creation of new professions and opportunities for those with expertise in these areas. In light of these rapid and sweeping changes, nurturing talent in the realm of computer science is of paramount importance. Using a talent development approach (Subotnik et al., 2011) and combining elements of Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS, Benner et al., 2013) and the Schoolwide Enrichment Model (SEM, Renzulli, 1977), we developed a model for computer science talent development. Tier I includes opportunities for all students to explore block-based computer programming and universal screening of computer science potential and interest in exploring more advanced content. Tier II focuses on developing students’ competency in computer science through a more specialized enrichment curriculum that introduces text-based programming. Tier III revolves around expertise and personalization as students are paired with mentors who guide students as they complete independent projects and learn about careers they are considering in the future. In this presentation, we introduce this model and discuss implications and applications in gifted education.
