Using the Schoolwide Enrichment Model (SEM) to Discover and Develop Interests and Talents of Students in Rural Schools in MexicoJanet B. Saenz

Monday, May 20, 2024, 1:45 – 3:15 pm, Lawrence D. McHugh Hall, Room MCHU 206

This creative research project for students in rural and indigenous schools in Mexico has been developed to discover the passions and interests of all students in rural and indigenous communities as well as to identify the gifted and talented. It involves the development of higher level thinking skills, the multiple talent approach, as well as a focus on the multiple Intelligences in primary and secondary schools. The Schoolwide Enrichment Model has been the central base of this unique method for involving regular and special education teachers, students and parents in developing Type I, and Type II activities as well as the final presentation of Portable Interest Centers as Type III projects. These centers combine the research and theories of Bloom, B., Gardner, H., Renzulli, J., Reis S., and Taylor, C. In some cases, the activity cards are developed in two or three languages. Photographs will be shared throughout this presentation.
