Voices from Practitioners and Families: Moving Toward Equitable Access to Gifted Education — Kristen Lamb, Nancy B. Hertzog, & A. J. Balatico
Monday, May 20, 2024, 1:45 – 3:15 pm, Lawrence D. McHugh Hall, Room MCHU 205
In this presentation, researchers report on two different studies that explored grassroots (constituents’) perspectives of equity in gifted education. Over several decades, the focus for designing more equitable gifted programs has been on the identification process rather than the perspectives and experiences of the constituents served by gifted education. Researchers aimed to give voice to those who implemented policies and practices, as well as those who were most impacted by those practices. In these studies, researchers used qualitative methods to examine equity issues in gifted education through the views of administrators in a Northwestern U.S. state and parent members of a local non-profit organization. Specific data collection included interviews and focus groups. Findings from both studies shed light on strategies, challenges, and barriers to implementing equity initiatives in gifted education programming.
