- The John Newbery Medalis awarded annually by the Association for Library Service to Children to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children.
- The Randolph Caldecott Medalis awarded annually by the Association for Library Service to Children to the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children.
- The Coretta Scott King Book Awards are presented annually to authors and illustrators of African descent whose books promote an understanding and appreciation of the "American Dream."
- The Pura Belpré Award is presented biennially to a Latino/Latina writer and illustrator whose work best portrays, affirms, and celebrates the Latino cultural experience in an outstanding work of literature for children and youth.
- The Robert F. Sibert Informational Book Medal is awarded annually by the Association for Library Service to Children to the author of the most distinguished informational book published in English during the preceding year.
- The Theodor Seuss Geisel Award is given annually to the author and illustrator of the most distinguished American book for beginning readers published in English in the United States during the preceding year.
Books About Science and Social Studies
- The National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) and Children’s Book Council (CBC) release an annual list of Outstanding Science Trade Books for Students K–12. Although the list was originally designed for students in grades K through 8, beginning in 2002, the list was expanded to include high school level material as well.
- The National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS) and Children’s Book Council (CBC) release an annual list of Notable Social Studies Trade Books For Young People.
- The ALSC/Booklist/YALSA Odyssey Award for Excellence in Audiobook Production is given to the producer of the best audiobook produced for children and/or young adults, available in English in the United States.
Books For Children, Adolescents, and Young Adults
- The Children’s Choices Reading List is a reading list with a twist! Children themselves evaluate the books and write reviews of their favorites. Cosponsored by the International Reading Association and the Children’s Book Council.
- The Young Adults’ Choices project develops an annual list of new books that will encourage adolescents to read. The books are selected by the readers themselves, so they are bound to be popular with middle and secondary school students.
- The Teachers’ Choices project develops an annual annotated reading list of new books that will encourage young people to read. These are books that kids will enjoy—and that contribute to learning across the curriculum.
- Carol Hurst’s Children’s Literature Site is a collection of reviews of great books for kids, ideas of ways to use them in the classroom and collections of books and activities about particular subjects, curriculum areas, themes and professional topics.
- AdLit.org’s Themed lists of Great Books for Teens, prepared by literature advisor Jamie Watson, will help you find books to engage even the most reluctant readers. Sometimes it just takes one great book to turn a kid into a reader!
- The Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books is one of the nation’s leading children’s book review journals for school and public librarians.
- The Horn Book is based on the popular literary magazine about books for children and young adults. It includes reviews of children’s books, articles, and interviews with authors and illustrators.
- The Children’s Book Council is the nonprofit trade association of publishers and packagers of trade books and related materials for children and young adults. This site offers the latest information about recently released publications.
