Talent Development: Professional Preparation for Teachers to Share Disciplinary Structures With Advanced LearnersLaurie Croft

Tuesday, May 21, 2024, 10:45 am – 12:15 pm, Lawrence D. McHugh Hall, Room MCHU 202

Teachers are essential catalysts for the talent development of advanced learners, and “teachers matter more to student achievement than any other aspect of schooling” (RAND Corporation, 2012, p. 1). Years of research suggest that teachers of the gifted have significant differences from general education teachers. Teachers of students identified as gifted perceive student needs within the contexts of giftedness and their fields of study. They also facilitate rapid pacing, including inquiry-based learning and independent study. Teachers of these advanced learners encourage students to engage with disciplinary complexity and encourage divergent and creative thinking. They provide learner-centered classroom environments as well as establish other gifted-friendly policies.
